About our pergola and patio cover work

What Cedar Sun does on a pergola and patio cover project.

Shade structures are a signature part of our portfolio — nearly a quarter of the projects in our gallery are pergola and patio cover builds. We build freestanding and attached pergolas, typically in western red cedar or redwood, plus covered patios when you want fuller shade. Every structure starts with properly set concrete footings, and attached designs get an engineered ledger connection to the house so the structure carries load the way it should. We can rough in electrical during the build for outdoor lighting and ceiling fans. Whether it's a backyard pergola over a new deck, a covered patio off the kitchen, or a poolside shade structure, we design it to fit the house and build it to handle coastal sun and wind.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about pergola and patio cover.

What's the difference between a pergola and a patio cover?

A pergola has an open or slatted roof that filters sunlight without fully blocking it. A patio cover has a solid roof for full shade and rain protection. Both can be freestanding or attached to the house, and we build both — the right choice depends on how you want to use the space.

Do I need a permit for a pergola or patio cover?

It depends on the size, the height, and whether the structure attaches to the house. Attached structures and larger freestanding ones typically require a permit; small freestanding pergolas often don't. We confirm the requirements with your city or county and pull the permit whenever one is needed.

What wood do you build pergolas with?

Most of our pergolas are western red cedar or redwood. Both are naturally resistant to rot and insects, weather well in the coastal climate, and can be stained or sealed to match your home.

Can you add lighting or a ceiling fan to a pergola?

Yes. We rough in the electrical during the build so outdoor lighting and fans are wired cleanly through the posts and beams instead of being surface-run afterward.
